Since my accident and rehab, my vision was wrecked, my hearing in one ear was down to ~30%, and my taste and smell were gone.
My vision healed and came back to 20/20 within about 6 to 7 months.
I was told that although surgery could be performed on the hearing in my right ear, nothing was guaranteed and at best it would likely end up where it is today, 25-30% remaining.
My loss of taste and smell is neurological and unlikely to recover on its own the way my vision did.
Although I haven't cared much about it, I recognize that it does have an effect on me. I walk to the fridge craving something specific, but I walk away unsatisfied every time.
The signal fires but the feedback is gone.
