The California Gold Rush, retold to be historically accurate today.
Nobody found gold.
A guy wrote "GOLD" on a rock and got funded.
A man who had never touched dirt gave a keynote.
Twelve guys in Utah started a club where they sold each other's rocks to each other at the conference they invited each other to.
Real gold existed.
Nobody checked.
But good luckโthe river's clogged with people panning for applause, the water's 40% spray-painted gravel from a "disruption-focused" prospecting startup, and some guy just got press for "revolutionizing the pickaxe" by adding a second handle.
