Our Kids Are Free.

Tyler is 20, Kaitlyn 17, Brooklyn 15 and Travis 14 and reflecting on this, I can't help but think....

Our kids are perfect.

I'm biased, sure, but also correct.

Lindsey and I never changed who we are to appeal to societal norms or religious commons or whatever parenting industrial complex everyone else subscribed to.

Our moral compass fits on a post-it note or better yet, an oreo cookie.

Be nice to others and don't lie.

That's it, no fine print or subsidiary clauses.

We don't have rules, but not because we're negligent. Because the kids figured out how we live and decided "that seems fine". Turns out modeling works better than legislating, who knew!?

I remember growing up rebelling a lot and getting grounded, cars and computers taken away, girlfriends restricted, the whole catalog. Our four kids, combined, across their entire childhoods? I can't fill one hand with incidents. Not because they're afraid but because there's nothing to push against. You can't rebel against people who aren't performing authority.

It's not what we're doing. It's what we're not doing.

The kids are fine. Better than fine. They're free.
